Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia praises the House of Representatives for passing the State Police Bill, describing it as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s security framework. In a Democracy Day broadcast on Friday, Alia says the legislation recognizes the need for localized, responsive policing that can address the specific security challenges faced by different states and communities. He commends the lawmakers for what he calls courage, foresight, and commitment to protecting lives and property.
Alia also urges Nigerians to embrace the reform in good faith, arguing that state policing can complement existing security agencies if accompanied by proper safeguards and accountability. He adds that the approach could improve intelligence gathering and lead to quicker responses to threats.
According to Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor points to ongoing security efforts in Benue, including the provision of more than 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, the establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force. Alia links these measures to improved peace in parts of the state.
