Gombe State federal lawmaker Yaya Tongo (representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye) dies in an Abuja hospital, according to multiple reports. One outlet says he dies after a brief illness, with a former minister, Isa Pantami, stating that he died on Friday, 12 June 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja. Another report confirms that his death is registered and communicated through the House of Representatives and the Gombe state caucus in the national assembly.
The reports also describe the background of Tongo’s political career, including service as chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, special adviser to the Gombe state government, and a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly. In the House of Representatives, he is said to have served as chair of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group. He was reportedly first elected to the House in 2015 and re-elected in 2023 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, before later defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026.
Following his death, he is laid to rest in Gombe State, with state officials and other dignitaries attending and paying tribute.
