A magnitude 7.8 earthquake strikes off Maasim, Sarangani in Mindanao on June 8, and authorities report widespread impact across several regions. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) says about 724,000 people, or 173,000 families, are affected, based on its latest situation report. The NDRRMC also reports that around 2,000 families (10,000 individuals) are in 34 evacuation centers.
Separately, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through its Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) reports that more than 500,000 individuals are affected. DSWD cites DROMIC Report No. 9 released at 6 p.m. on Friday, listing 137,081 families or 553,068 individuals from 401 barangays in Regions IX, XI, XII and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The NDRRMC places the death toll at 61, including seven in the Davao Region and 54 in Soccsksargen. The DSWD also reports that humanitarian assistance exceeds P84 million.
