Indian foreign minister S. Jaishankar speaks by phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to protest “unjustified” US attacks on commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members off the coast of Oman. The call follows New Delhi’s repeated diplomatic complaints, including summoning the US embassy’s top diplomatic representative in India for the second time in two days. India says the strikes resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors in one incident and it raises concerns about the safety of Indian seafarers and maritime interests in the region.

The US, including statements attributed to Rubio and the State Department, says the operations are carried out amid enforcement of a US naval blockade linked to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and that commercial vessels must comply with orders from US forces. The US position also emphasizes that violations of the blockade and illicit transport of Iranian oil will not be tolerated.

Reporting across outlets also describes multiple affected tankers operating near the Gulf of Oman in recent days, including a US action to disable a Palau-flagged tanker with Indian crew and a subsequent strike on another Palau-flagged tanker that killed three Indian sailors. Another vessel with Indian crew was also reported as attacked.
