Amazon says it is phasing out parts of its Singapore operations, including its local grocery delivery service. Bloomberg reports that a “small number of roles” in Singapore will be affected as Amazon winds down local fulfillment, including Amazon Fresh, in the country. Channel NewsAsia adds that Amazon expects to cut “less than 10%” of its workforce tied to these services, and says it will prioritize expanding its Amazon International Store selection with products sourced from markets such as the United States, Japan, and Germany.
The Next Web reports that Amazon Fresh and the local fulfillment network in Singapore shut down on 6 July, with only a limited number of roles moving with the service closures. Other functions are described as continuing, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail operations, and Global Selling.
Across the outlets, Amazon’s stated approach is to retreat from local grocery fulfillment in Singapore while shifting focus toward cross-border delivery of goods via its international store, with workforce reductions limited to roles associated with the phased-out operations.
