Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani grants clemency to 97 eligible inmates at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations. The governor announces the decision on his verified Facebook page, describing it as an exercise of mercy intended to balance justice with rehabilitation and reintegration.
According to the reports, the clemency is carried out under the governor’s prerogative of mercy and is meant to offer beneficiaries a second chance to rebuild their lives. The governor urges the freed inmates to take the opportunity responsibly, cultivate good character, and acquire skills that would help them positively contribute to society.
The state government and outlets also note that the initiative involves multiple stakeholders. The governor expresses appreciation to the Judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy for their roles in facilitating the process.
