Nigerian inmates held in Ethiopia celebrate news of a prisoner transfer agreement that will allow them to return home to serve the remainder of their sentences. Multiple Nigerian outlets report that the federal government signs the pact with Ethiopia as part of efforts to bring more than 100 prisoners back to Nigeria. The agreement is signed by Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Hanna Arayaselassie, with senior officials from both governments present. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, says the arrangement reflects shared commitments to justice and also recognizes factors that can support rehabilitation and reintegration, including family support, language, culture, and social ties. She identifies Ethiopian facilities holding Nigerians as Kaliti Prison and Aba Samuel Prison. Outlet reports also say at least four inmates have died and some others are critically ill. After the announcement, videos shared by government officials show inmates celebrating and thanking President Bola Tinubu, who they say is prioritizing their welfare. Odumegwu-Ojukwu also delivers assurances during a visit to inmates at Aba Samuel Prisons, reiterating that Nigeria will not abandon its citizens abroad.
