A 35-year-old Indian second officer, Nishanth Uirthanathan of Tamil Nadu, dies onboard the MT Celestial off Oman’s coast, according to multiple reports. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) alleges that he died after falling seriously ill on June 11 and that the body remained on the vessel for more than two days without proper refrigeration, creating health concerns for the crew. FSUI says crew members used cold water bottles to slow decomposition and shared a video in which the captain appeals for help with repatriation. The union attributes the situation to delays in medical evacuation and links the delay to regional tensions, while also accusing the shipowner of negligence and inadequate support. It also claims that a low-cost medical evacuation option could have helped.

The allegations about medical delays and refrigeration have not been independently verified, and there is no immediate public response reported from the shipowner. Separately, the Indian Embassy in Muscat says it is coordinating with Omani authorities, port officials and the shipping company, and adds that arrangements are being made for the early repatriation of Uirthanathan’s mortal remains. The vessel is expected to berth soon at Duqm port, while the family and political figures call for a prompt return and an investigation.
