The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of misappropriation of donations collected in the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple donation boxes in Ayodhya. The move follows a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which said rumours and misinformation were spreading and that an independent probe is needed to establish facts and ensure transparency.

The allegations centre on claims that about ₹7 crore collected from the donation boxes may have been stolen or misappropriated. Earlier, the Trust detained two employees involved in counting donations on suspicion of financial irregularities. Reports cited claims of disproportionate assets in relation to their salaries, including one employee allegedly purchasing land worth around ₹1.5 crore and another acquiring property valued at roughly ₹40 lakh despite earning monthly salaries of about ₹18,000–₹20,000.

In a related development, police with Trust officials conducted a search at the residence of former temple employee Lavkush Mishra in Meenapur Thakuran village under Rudauli. Cash amounting to about ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh was recovered. Mishra’s family denied the allegations, saying officials took away cash during the search. The SIT is headed by Vijay Vishwas Pant, IAS, with other senior officials included in the team.
