The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says its presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, never threatened to leave the party. NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director dismisses widely circulated reports that Kwankwaso planned to dump the NDC over candidate selection disputes in Kano State. Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Director describes the claims as speculation and says media reports are aimed at harming the party’s prospects. He also attributes the rumours to the ruling party and some opposition actors.
The outlets report that the issue traces back to earlier candidate changes in Kano State. The NDC replaced several candidates submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction, citing an alleged breach of a power-sharing agreement. One source says a document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hussaini Isah Mairiga, states the changes were made to align with an earlier arrangement on distribution of party positions and elective tickets between the existing party structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
NDC officials therefore maintain that Kwankwaso remains committed and that the “threat to leave” narrative is unfounded.
