Former Imo State governor Chief Achike Udenwa sues Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), seeking N5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory remarks. The dispute stems from Okonkwo’s interview on Channels TV on 8 June 2026, in which he allegedly linked Udenwa to the “extortion” of political aspirants seeking elective positions under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). According to the reports, Okonkwo said the NDC released statements that only the South East caucus was involved in such problems, and he alleged that leaders associated with that caucus, including Udenwa and others, were “busy extorting” South East aspirants.
Udenwa’s legal counsel, Soronnadi A. Njoku (SAN), is reported to have demanded a retraction and a public apology, in addition to N5 billion in damages. The coverage also notes that Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, has filed a separate court action against Okonkwo over the same underlying allegation, indicating multiple legal proceedings tied to the remarks.
