Eight people die and seven others are injured after a pick-up vehicle plunges into an uncovered roadside well in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, police report. The accident occurs on Sunday in Malshiras tehsil, near the Tandulwadi village area, when the truck carrying a family veers off the Mhaswad–Pandharpur Road and falls into the well.
The victims include four women and four children. Reports also note that villagers help with the rescue, pulling out survivors from the well. Police state that seven people are injured, while the overall death toll is eight. The incident draws attention to the condition of the roadside well, with one report saying the well does not have safety barriers.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the road, including whether the driver misjudged the turn and the well’s lack of protective measures.
