A group of rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has formally approached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to request separate seating and to announce plans to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The MPs say they are elected on the AITC/TMC ticket and describe the merger as a “time being” arrangement while they submit their case through parliamentary procedures. Sources also state that the number involved is 20. According to Dastidar, the rebel MPs have received acceptance from NCPI and say they intend to work with the NDA, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Multiple outlets report that the Speaker’s decision may not be immediate. One report says Birla plans to meet TMC leadership, including floor leader Abhishek Banerjee, before taking a final call. Abhishek Banerjee has reportedly urged the Speaker not to recognise the rebel faction as a separate bloc, and the Speaker is expected to hear both sides as part of due process.
