India calls on Bangladesh to cooperate in repatriating Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in India, linking the process to pending nationality verification. India’s Ministry of External Affairs says thousands of nationality verification cases for Bangladeshi citizens remain unresolved with Bangladesh, including some that have been pending for several years. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal states that over 2,862 cases are still pending, with a number of them dating back more than five years, indicating delays in confirming identities and citizenship details needed for repatriation procedures.
India also urges Bangladesh to expedite these verification processes so repatriation can proceed more smoothly under existing bilateral arrangements between the two countries. Both outlets report that India’s request focuses on faster cooperation from Bangladesh on confirming nationality, which is presented as a prerequisite for managing repatriation of people found to be residing without valid status in India.
