Former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (ret.) warns that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity could soon put senior political leaders at risk from bandits and other armed groups. Speaking on Sunday, Buratai made the comments in response to reports that retired Major General Abubakar Rabe was killed by bandits, describing the killing of a senior military officer as a serious security concern that reflects how criminal groups are becoming more daring.

Buratai says the trend, if unchecked, could expand beyond soldiers and civilians to include ministers, senators, and state governors. He links the increased threat to what he describes as improved intelligence and weaponry used by armed groups and growing confidence among them.

He also criticises approaches that involve paying ransoms or negotiating with criminal groups, arguing that these methods should stop. Instead, he calls for a coordinated military and intelligence offensive and suggests establishing a unified security command with direct authority over operations in high-risk states. He further urges authorities to identify and prosecute individuals he says support armed groups through activities such as illegal mining and ransom-related negotiations.
