About 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs approach Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to state that they have merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and will support the BJP-led NDA, according to reports from multiple outlets. The MPs meet Birla at his Delhi residence and submit a letter requesting that they be allowed to function separately. The Speaker is now set to review the submitted signatures before deciding on whether to approve the merger.
The NCPI is described as a small, “registered unrecognised” party. It is registered in West Bengal and had contested a limited number of seats in the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections, with election records showing low donations. Some reporting also notes that NCPI did not have any MP or MLA at the time, and that if the merger is approved it would raise NCPI’s standing in the Lok Sabha. Other details cited by one outlet include a reported connection of NCPI’s founding member with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
