Senator Adams Oshiomhole says the daughter of Senate President Godswill Akpabio obtained a “juicy” position at Nigeria’s national oil company, NNPC (NNPCL), without merit or standard recruitment procedures. Speaking on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Oshiomhole defends his earlier criticism of the Senate’s engagement with alleged financial irregularities at NNPC. He links his nepotism claim to the broader controversy around former NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari, stating that Akpabio’s daughter was placed in a senior role by Kyari and suggesting the appointment bypassed interviews and due process.
Oshiomhole argues that public officials’ relatives working in NNPC is not automatically wrong, but he says an issue arises when appointees are allegedly unqualified and when procedures are not followed transparently. He also claims nepotism is widespread at NNPC, describing a pattern in which relatives of officials are placed in top positions.
The remarks come as the Senate continues a probe into NNPC’s finances covering 2017 to 2023, including discrepancies involving receivables and payables, amid political tensions over how the company is characterized and investigated.
