Gauteng is increasing school security measures in response to reported violence, including stabbings and incidents of schools and infrastructure being burned. The province’s education department, led by MEC Lebogang Maile, outlines a targeted response aimed at strengthening protection across a range of schools. The interventions include providing security support to 422 schools, installing CCTV systems in 606 schools, and adding extra protective measures in 121 high-risk schools. The department frames the rollout as a strategic effort to respond to threats facing learners and school facilities, while focusing resources on areas deemed more vulnerable. The announcement follows a pattern of incidents cited as contributing to heightened concern in the province’s education sector. The stated measures combine increased physical presence through security staff with technology-based monitoring in a larger number of schools, alongside intensified support for schools assessed as high risk.
