President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is in Kazan, Russia for the ASEAN-Russia commemorative summit and is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his two-day visit. Multiple Philippine outlets report that the core agenda for the Marcos-Putin talks centers on food security and energy security. The Department of Foreign Affairs says the two leaders are likely to discuss these areas because they are mutually important to both countries, with participation also tied to broader regional considerations. In addition to energy and food-related discussions, officials expect the talks to cover wider cooperation. Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Dominic Xavier Imperial is cited as saying leaders may explore possible collaboration in nuclear energy. Other reporting also links the engagement to parallel regional priorities discussed around the ASEAN-Russia summit, including security and trade, alongside energy and food security. Marcos’ trip to Russia is described as his first visit to Russian territory, occurring about 50 years after his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., visited Russia. Marcos departs Manila shortly after midnight June 16 and arrives in time to take part in the summit and the bilateral meeting.
