India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry launches a revised Wholesale Price Index (WPI) series using 2022–23 as the base year and also releases new Producer Price Index (PPI) data for goods and services. The government reports that wholesale inflation is 9.68% in May on a year-on-year basis. It also publishes updated WPI figures and related producer price measures, positioning the changes as part of efforts to modernize how price movements are tracked.
Under the revised WPI framework, the basket expands to 957 items from 697 earlier. The government reorganizes categories within energy and, for the first time, includes renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, along with nuclear electricity. It also links the new methodology to updated weight assignment and price-handling approaches.
Alongside the WPI revision, the government releases output PPI for all commodities and a trial input PPI for the manufacturing sector, and introduces service producer price indices for an initial set of seven service sectors. Multiple outlets report that the government plans to phase out WPI data over the next five years while users gradually shift to the broader PPI framework, citing alignment with international recommendations and IMF practices.
