Gunmen suspected to be cultists invade Oreta community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, killing three people, including 22-year-old resident Abdulmalik Bakare, and two other victims. The attack happens around Wednesday night and triggers fear among residents and disrupts commercial activities. According to Bakare’s father, Tunde Bakare, six suspects are arrested in connection with the killings. Family members say the divisional police officer assures them that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
Residents attribute the violence to tensions linked to an earlier confrontation on Gbogbo Road involving a trailer driver and youths. One account says youths stopped a container-laden trailer and demanded money from the driver, who reportedly said his Chinese employers had already paid N350,000 to relevant individuals at a nearby junction. A youth who climbed the trailer was reportedly trapped under a tyre and died, which police said was an accident and had been settled.
However, residents claim some youths later regroup and carry out a retaliatory attack around 8 p.m., arriving on motorcycles and shooting indiscriminately, including victims reportedly killed near shops and while eating. The identities of the two other victims are not confirmed in the reports, and officials from the Lagos State Police Command did not respond to journalists’ attempts to reach them.
