OpenAI is expanding the rollout of its ChatGPT advertising pilot beyond its initial markets. After launching a self-service ads platform in the United States, the company says it will begin testing sponsored ads inside its ChatGPT AI chatbot in additional regions over the coming weeks. The planned expansion includes the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico, according to multiple outlets.

The pilot, which has so far been limited to the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, is described as a new international test of ads within the chatbot experience. OpenAI says it is specifically targeting adult users on the platform’s “Free” and “Go” subscription tiers. The expansion is positioned as an effort to monetize a large free-user base while responding to the growing need to offset the costs associated with running and maintaining AI models.

OpenAI’s vice president of global ad solutions, Dave Dugan, says the company is expanding the regions where it tests ChatGPT ads because businesses want to reach users in dialogue-driven environments. The ads are expected to be tested first through pilots rather than a full rollout across all markets.
