Nigeria’s headline inflation rate rises to 15.93% in May 2026, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The figure increases from 15.69% in April 2026, marking the third consecutive monthly rise in 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the NBS reports that May 2026 headline inflation is up 0.24 percentage points from April 2026, reflecting continued pressure on the average price level. On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation in May 2026 is 1.75%, which is lower than the 2.13% recorded in April.

The NBS also reports that food inflation edges up to 16.96% in May 2026 on a year-on-year basis, from 16.68% in April. On a month-on-month basis, food inflation is 2.98% in May 2026, down from 3.63% in April. While several outlets note that food prices continue to drive inflation, the broader inflation increase remains tied to persistent price pressures impacting household spending. All outlets attribute the data change to the NBS Consumer Price Index (CPI) and inflation report released on Monday.
