The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says vandals have destroyed 14 spans of a 132kV transmission line in Lambata, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. TCN raises the alarm that the attacks amount to sabotage and warns they could disrupt electricity supply to hospitals, businesses, and households, while also creating safety risks if conductors fall and leave residual voltage.
At a security and community engagement meeting, TCN’s Abuja Regional General Manager, Musa Shuaibu, links the damage to a recent increase in vandalism affecting electricity infrastructure. He says the line, which has been in place for over 40 years, had previously operated without major interference.
TCN estimates that repairing the damage will cost at least ₦32 million, potentially diverting funds from other infrastructure upgrades. The company also says it has taken enforcement action, including the detention of suspects arrested for vandalism in the Abuja Region at Kuje Correctional Centre pending trial.
Security agencies, vigilante groups, and traditional leaders pledge support to protect the transmission facilities, and TCN says it is running broader efforts to improve monitoring and deter further vandalism.
