Nigeria’s Federal Government says it will deploy a nationwide digital postcode system to strengthen security, combat fraud, and support e-commerce and logistics. The plan is announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a workshop in Abuja on implementing the Nigerian Digital Postcode for national security and public safety. The system will assign a unique digital address to every building in Nigeria, including rural areas, so that security agencies, businesses, and public institutions can more accurately identify and locate people and properties.

Officials say the rollout will operate as a full-scale national infrastructure rather than a limited pilot. A first phase is scheduled for October, with coverage expected across several states before the end of the year. The Postmaster-General of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, says implementation will include privacy safeguards and coordination with Nigeria’s Data Protection Commission. The government also links the initiative to improvements in emergency response, policing and intelligence gathering, border monitoring, and anti-money-laundering efforts. Citizens are expected to access the digital addresses through mobile apps, USSD codes, and online platforms, including AI-assisted routing for delivery efficiency.
