Leaders and workers of Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) protest outside the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) office in Kalyan against the installation of smart electricity meters. According to reports, separate demonstrations are held at MSEDCL’s Tejashree Office, with both parties alleging that consumers are being pressured to accept new meters without their consent. Protesters also link their opposition to rising electricity bills and frequent power outages, arguing that the utility and administration have not addressed recurring complaints.
During the protests, Shiv Sena activists symbolically throw bangles toward officials as part of their protest. MNS workers later join the demonstration at the same location, and the atmosphere turns tense during the meetings with MSEDCL officials. In a memorandum submitted to senior utility officials, protesters demand that smart meters not be installed without explicit consumer consent, that coercive practices stop, and that unannounced power cuts be ended, particularly during the summer season.
Police and security staff are present, and no major incident is reported. Both parties state they oppose forced implementation rather than the technology itself, warning they will intensify agitation if installations continue despite objections.
