Police in Los Angeles shoot and kill a family’s two-year-old mixed-breed dog, Jameson, after responding to complaints related to loud celebrations following the New York Knicks’ NBA Championship win. The incident takes place on Saturday night in Canoga Park, near an apartment complex on Jordan Avenue. According to LAPD, officers arrive shortly before 9 p.m. and speak with a woman inside the residence while the dog is nearby. LAPD says officers asked that the animal be secured and that, after the apartment door is reopened, the dog allegedly runs toward an officer, leading to an officer-involved shooting. The dog is declared dead at the scene.
The family disputes the police account and says the dog was not aggressive. Jeremiah Garcia says his family had been celebrating the Knicks’ victory and that the shooting occurs while he is on FaceTime. He says officers shot Jameson while the dog was still wearing a Knicks T-shirt and that it was still dressed that way when he returned home. The family has posted photos and videos online and has launched a campaign calling for justice, while LAPD states its Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident. The footage of the aftermath spreads widely online.
