European leaders are set to press U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, warning that any “superficial” interim Iran agreement could entrench Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Multiple reports describe European officials as urging Trump to reconsider the scope and safeguards of the Iran deal, arguing that a limited arrangement may not adequately address long-term proliferation risks.
In addition to Iran, European leaders are also expected to raise concerns about Trump’s approach to the war in Ukraine. The discussions are expected to include calls for Ukraine to “rethink” its strategy, and for alignment among allies on the direction of diplomacy and support. The summit, taking place June 15–17, includes leaders of France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, along with the European Union.
