Mumbai’s southwest monsoon is delayed by about five days even though Maharashtra’s monsoon onset is reported to be timely. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the delay is linked to the monsoon remaining stalled over south Konkan. IMD attributes the stalled conditions to dry air in the region and the absence of low-pressure systems that typically help drive the monsoon’s movement inland. As a result, Mumbai continues to experience hot and humid weather while the monsoon activity has not progressed to bring more widespread rainfall. The IMD assessment points to the ongoing interruption in the monsoon’s regional progression rather than an overall failure of the monsoon season. The delay is therefore treated as a localized slowdown in the monsoon’s movement across Konkan, with the city continuing to wait for the expected seasonal rains.
