Rico Gedel, also known as Rashid Gedel, is accused of murdering Ian Watkins, the disgraced former Lostprophets singer, at HMP Wakefield. According to prosecutors, the attack takes place in Gedel’s cell on 11 October, when Watkins—who is serving a 29-year sentence for child sexual offences—suffers fatal injuries after being stabbed in the head and neck with a homemade knife. The court hears that Gedel also allegedly told prison guards that they “could be talking to someone famous,” describing a claim of potential celebrity as a result of the killing. In addition, one account presented to the jury says Gedel told Watkins to “have a good night’s sleep” after stabbing him. Prosecutors further state that the homemade knife is passed to another prisoner, Samuel Dodsworth, during the incident. The case is being heard at Leeds Crown Court, where the jury hears evidence related to the alleged stabbing and Gedel’s comments to staff following the attack.
