The Federal Ministry of Education has firmly denied claims that the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) was hacked, stating that the platform remains fully secure with no evidence of any cyberattack. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the ministry described media reports suggesting a breach as “inaccurate and misleading.”“The Ministry wishes to categorically state that the report is inaccurate and misleading. At no time was the NEMIS platform hacked, breached, or subjected to any cyberattack. The integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data on the platform remain fully intact,” the statement said. The ministry clarified that a temporary browser warning message experienced by some users resulted from a routine SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate configuration issue at the hosting level, not a security incident.Officials emphasised that the technical glitch did not lead to unauthorised access, data loss, alteration of records, or exposure of sensitive information. The ministry’s technical team promptly collaborated with the hosting provider to resolve the matter and restore normal operations. The statement further noted that SSL certificate alerts should not automatically be taken as signs of a cyberattack, as such warnings can stem from standard technical or configuration issues.NEMIS serves as a critical digital platform for collecting, managing, and utilising education data nationwide.
