The Obidient Movement condemns a Federal High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties. According to reports, on Monday Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered INEC to delist the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, Action People’s Party, Action Alliance, and Zenith Labour Party. The ruling followed a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that parties that do not meet constitutional and legal thresholds under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 should be deregistered.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement describes the decision as a setback for Nigeria’s democratic space and a threat to democratic inclusion. The group, which aligns with Peter Obi’s political philosophy, says democracy benefits from inclusiveness and multiple political platforms for citizens to express their aspirations. It urges continued civic engagement, accountability, and voter mobilisation, stressing the importance of voters’ Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) ahead of future elections.
