Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is promoting its Morpheus Software—VM Essentials as an alternative to VMware by offering new customers a free first year of licenses. The offer is announced as part of HPE Discover in Las Vegas. HPE describes VM Essentials as a “VMware alternative” and says it includes a hardware virtual machine (HVM) hypervisor plus unified management that can manage VMware ESXi and HVM clusters from one console, with migration supported when customers are ready.
According to HPE’s announcement, new VM Essentials customers can receive up to one year of the software for free, along with a migration add-on: a year of HPE Zerto for $1. HPE also offers financing options via HPE Financial Services, including “0 percent interest” on software. Separately, for a limited period from March 1 to June 30, HPE is running a rebate promotion tied to purchasing an AMD server and a one-year VM Essentials license.
The promotions appear aimed at customers and partners considering migration amid VMware licensing changes following Broadcom’s acquisition. Ars Technica also reports a partner view that HPE should distribute more free licenses more broadly to accelerate adoption, while TechRadar summarizes the core offer and migration pricing.
