Sony Interactive Entertainment has published a patent describing a controller with buttons that can change their hardness and resistance based on what is happening in a game. Multiple reports say the patent application was first filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in November 2024 and was published in May of the following year. The document outlines ways to modify the physical feel of buttons, including changing how much force is required to press them. One approach uses a magneto-viscoelastic elastomer, a material that hardens or softens in response to magnetic inputs generated by magnets inside the controller. The reports also describe an alternative concept involving fluid-filled membranes to achieve similar force-feedback effects. Another described mechanism would allow a finger to partially sink into a button, after which the button would harden around the finger, potentially simulating situations where additional resistance is needed.
