The UK Ministry of Defence is investigating reports that a Russian frigate fired warning shots near a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel. Multiple outlets report the incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, when the yacht was sailing a little over 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, with the location described as between the Isle of Wight and Normandy. The ship involved is identified as Russia’s frigate Admiral Grigorovich. According to reports relayed from the yacht, the shots were fired from roughly 500 metres (about 500 yards in one account) away while the vessels were separated by around 20 nautical miles. No damage or injuries are reported. The yacht continues on its journey. British naval assets are reported to have been monitoring the frigate, including the sea-capable patrol vessel HMS Mersey. A boat from HMS Tyne is said to have visited the yacht to check on passengers and gather details. The episode is reported as part of wider tensions in the Channel involving Russian vessels and recent UK actions concerning a Russian shadow fleet tanker.
