Three young Canadians and two environmental groups file a lawsuit against the Canadian government seeking to force the development of a climate action plan to meet the country’s stated climate goals. The plaintiffs are three young women and the groups include the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), which is listed as a party to the case, alongside Equal Justice.

The case targets the government’s current approach to climate policy, arguing that Canada is not on track to meet its emissions targets for 2030. Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada set a goal of cutting total carbon emissions by 40–45% below 2005 levels by 2030. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government acknowledges that Canada is unlikely to meet those targets.

The lawsuit describes climate change as an “existential threat,” and cites court documents reviewed by AFP that Canada is warming about twice as fast as the global average, with faster warming in its northern regions. Plaintiffs say the government made a legal commitment to pursue climate targets and must produce an up-to-date, credible course of action. The government is expected to respond in court, with related youth-climate litigation reported separately as proceeding later this year.
