A federal judge blocks Idaho from enforcing a new law that criminalizes transgender people’s use of bathrooms and changing rooms that do not match their sex assigned at birth. According to multiple reports, U.S. District Judge Amanda Brailsford of the District of Idaho issues a preliminary injunction, preventing the state from applying the measure while the legal challenge proceeds.
The law, described as one of the most restrictive in the country, targets bathroom and changing-room access for people whose gender identity does not align with their biological sex. Courthouse News and The Hill report that the statute, identified as H.B. 752, makes such use a crime and includes potential penalties of up to five years in prison.
The New York Times says six transgender residents challenge the law, arguing it violates their constitutional rights. The court action temporarily halts enforcement, leaving the underlying dispute over the law’s constitutionality to be resolved through further proceedings.
