Zamfara State authorities and the police are mourning three officers killed in an explosion on the Anka–Bagega road in Anka Local Government Area. Multiple reports say the blast is caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by bandit terrorists, as the officers were carrying out operational duties in the area. One account specifies the incident occurred around 5:05pm on June 15 and involved a team led by an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer, with personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). Security sources cited in one report say the team was conducting a controlled clearance operation, and an armoured personnel carrier used during the operation accidentally triggered the device. The three officers reported killed include the EOD unit officer and two other inspectors attached to the VCRU/EOD operations. After the explosion, the bodies are evacuated to a Federal Medical Centre in Gusau for post-mortem examination, according to the reports. Following the incident, Zamfara’s government reiterates its intention to intensify actions against banditry and other criminal activities, while security forces strengthen measures and continue efforts to clear the affected road and prevent further attacks.
