Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is set to halt airline operations for much of July 4 to clear airspace for Independence Day festivities in Washington, D.C. Multiple outlets report that the airport will close its runways to airline traffic after noon on July 4, with flight disruptions expected to last for several hours. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) attributes the restrictions to a combination of aerial rehearsals, fireworks, and related evening events planned for the July 4 holiday.

In addition to July 4, some reports indicate runway closures will also affect operations earlier in the weekend, including the afternoon of July 3. The planned disruptions are tied not only to standard Independence Day activities but also to celebrations surrounding the nation’s 250th anniversary.

One outlet also notes that DCA is scheduled to stop operations temporarily in late August for the Washington Grand Prix, indicating the summer period includes other airspace and runway-related closures beyond Independence Day.
