John Lewis says it will invest £20 million in a redevelopment of its Glasgow city-centre store at Buchanan Galleries. The upgrade forms part of a broader retailer plan to spend £50 million this financial year refreshing several department-store locations. Alongside Glasgow, John Lewis also earmarks stores in Cambridge, Leicester, Reading and Liverpool for investment as it focuses on making its estate more “experience-led.”
The Glasgow revamp is described as the company’s largest single-store investment in more than five years. Coverage also frames the project as a vote of confidence in the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre, which had previously been scheduled for demolition, before its future plans shifted.
Retail Gazette reports the wider programme is part of a longer-term effort that would total around £800 million by 2029.
