South Australia’s parliament considers a bill that would restrict access to abortions after 25 weeks. Multiple outlets report that the bill first passes the state’s upper house, but fails in the lower house, preventing it from becoming law.

ABC Australia reports the upper house vote passes the legislation by 10 votes to 9, with support that includes three newly elected One Nation MPs. Other outlets similarly describe the bill as controversial and note it advances through the upper house.

In the lower house, all outlets agree the bill is defeated. ABC Australia reports the legislation does not pass, with the lower house voting 36 votes to 9 against it. The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, and Brisbane Times also describe the bill’s defeat in the lower house. The West Australian and PerthNow likewise state the measure does not reach the threshold needed after falling short in the lower house.

As a result, restrictions on late-term abortions after 25 weeks are not enacted through this bill.
