Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are reviewing progress on major infrastructure at the Bhandup Complex, which is central to Mumbai’s water supply. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Ashwini Bhide visited the water treatment plant project and directed officials to ensure work is completed within the stipulated timeframe. The Bhandup Complex currently has two operational water treatment plants with a combined capacity of about 2,810 MLD and supplies treated water to large parts of the city. The civic body is replacing an existing facility commissioned in 1979 with a new state-of-the-art 2,000 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant on a 7.4-hectare site, with the project being executed by Welspun Enterprises and Veolia as the technology partner. The water plant project is discussed alongside BMC’s sewage treatment upgrade programme: the 215 MLD Bhandup Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is in its final phase and is expected to be commissioned by October 2026. The STP is designed to use primary, secondary and tertiary treatment to produce reclaimed water for non-potable uses, supported by related pipeline work for tertiary-treated water movement from Ghatkopar to Bhandup.
