US President Donald Trump says the United States is “very close” to reaching a trade agreement with India after meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. Speaking in response to questions about timing, Trump describes the talks as nearing completion and praises Modi as a “tough negotiator.” Trump also frames the broader relationship as “stronger than ever,” saying the two countries have the “best relationship” and cannot be “any closer.”

Trump further tells Modi that the United States would help if India were attacked, emphasizing defence cooperation and portraying the relationship as a personal partnership as well. On employment and workforce issues, he says the United States will continue to provide opportunities for skilled Indian professionals, describing Indians as “very talented people.”

Modi says cooperation has accelerated since their last meeting in Washington and that officials from both countries are working in close coordination across multiple areas. Both leaders mention ongoing economic engagement, including investment and trade talks, and Modi raises regional concerns such as keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, alongside the role of Indian seafarers.
