John Lowe, a former writer on CBS’ “Matlock,” sues CBS Television Studios and members of the show’s leadership, alleging racially and sexually inappropriate conduct that created a hostile work environment. Multiple reports say Lowe filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday and names showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and executive producers Nicki Renna and Jeffrey Lieber. According to the complaints described by outlets, Lowe says leadership made harassing statements tied to his race and sexuality, including comments that allegedly stereotype his body and genitalia. The lawsuit also asserts that similar remarks were directed toward other Black cast and crew members.
The reports also state that Lowe claims he raised concerns and faced retaliation, including being removed from the show. Deadline further reports that allegations include a Juneteenth-related insult. CBS’ response, as reported by The New York Times, says the network was unable to find support for the allegations. The case seeks unspecified damages, and the parties’ claims have not been tested in court.
