A new national poll suggests more Canadians are reporting direct impacts from extreme weather. According to an online survey by Leger conducted June 12 to 15 with 1,512 Canadians, 30% of respondents say they were personally affected by extreme weather events in the previous 12 months. The events cited include heat waves, floods, fires and tornadoes. The results are described as an increase compared with a year earlier, indicating a growing share of Canadians reporting firsthand exposure to such conditions. While the findings point to a higher level of personal impact, the poll is based on self-reported experiences and reflects respondents’ perceptions of being affected by specific types of extreme weather. The survey provides a snapshot of public experience rather than a measurement of the total number of extreme weather events or their overall damage across the country. Overall, the poll indicates that a significant minority of Canadians—about three in every 10—report being directly affected by extreme weather in the last year.
