INEC Recognizes Sadiq Gombe as SDP Chairman, Replacing Shehu Gabam

Prof. Sadiq Gombe, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), on Monday formally assumed control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, bringing an end to a prolonged leadership crisis. The move follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent decision to recognise Gombe and his National Working Committee as the authentic leadership of the party, replacing the expelled former chairman, Shehu Gabam. Party officials hailed the development as a triumph for internal democracy and adherence to the party’s constitution. Speaking to journalists after taking over the secretariat, Gombe described the occasion as a significant milestone, coming almost exactly one year after the NWC initiated disciplinary actions against erring members. He stressed that the process followed due diligence, including investigations by a dedicated committee, review by a White Paper Committee, and full compliance with the party’s constitution. “All affected members were given fair hearing,” Gombe said. “We remained patient, committed to the law, and followed due process diligently. That is why we are here today.” The leadership dispute had escalated in recent months, leading to multiple court cases and competing claims. Gombe pointed to Supreme Court rulings, including a December 19, 2025 judgment on the party’s Ekiti State governorship candidate matter, which reinforced that political parties have the autonomy to manage their internal affairs. INEC updated its records on June 17, recognising Gombe as the substantive national chairman and removing the names of expelled officials. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, confirmed the update in a statement. Gombe extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, inviting them to reconcile and return to the party for the sake of Nigeria’s progress. He assured citizens that the SDP would position itself as a strong alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections, fielding capable candidates to tackle key issues such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, food security, and governance. The resolution is expected to stabilise the SDP and bolster its preparations for future polls.
