The U.S. says the actions were retaliation for attacks on U.S. forces and frames the incident as “unprovoked” hostilities by Iran.
Multiple outlets report the dispute as an escalation of accusations between the two sides while the broader ceasefire is described as still holding, with the incident centered on ship movements through a key maritime chokepoint.
