South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo says a drone sighting during the team’s closed training session is “unfortunate” ahead of its FIFA World Cup Group A match against Mexico. Multiple outlets report that the incident occurred while South Korea trained behind closed doors at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, Mexico, with no media present. During the session, a national team security official spotted a drone flying over the training ground. The official notified security and military personnel stationed at the facility, who intercepted the drone and brought it down. According to the Korea Football Association (KFA), two men believed to be the drone operators were picked up and fled before they could be caught by Mexican authorities. The KFA says it has asked local police to investigate and has informed FIFA about the incident. The reports note that drone flights are banned over stadiums and facilities hosting World Cup matches and events, including in Mexico and the United States, underscoring the breach and the heightened attention around training security as South Korea prepares for its match with the co-hosts.
