The BCCI is discussing moving the Indian Premier League to an earlier window beginning with the 2027 season, according to board secretary Devajit Saikia. Saikia says the board and the IPL Governing Council are exploring a start date around March 10, with the league running through about May 15. The proposal is aimed at avoiding extreme weather conditions, including heat-related risks that can affect late-season matches, as well as disruption from pre-monsoon rains.
Multiple parts of the planning are being reviewed to support the shift. Alongside the IPL calendar, the BCCI is considering adjustments to domestic scheduling so there is alignment with the earlier start. Sources also indicate that the league’s existing structure—its 74-match format—would be maintained if the new window is adopted. The discussions are described as ongoing, with the board evaluating how an earlier timeline would affect match conditions and potential disruptions before making any formal decision.
