The United Arab Emirates has introduced a new rule setting a minimum age of 15 for social media use. A cabinet-level resolution approved on Thursday prohibits children under 15 from creating, using, or operating personal social media accounts in the UAE. As a result, under-15 users are barred from posting, commenting, sharing, or joining public groups.

The measures apply to social media platforms operating in the country and require companies to carry out age-verification checks to prevent under-age accounts. Multiple reports say platforms have a transition period of about 12 months to review their services, remove accounts belonging to children below the age limit, and ensure compliance. Authorities also warn that platforms that do not comply may face penalties, including potential blocking.

The UAE’s move is described by several outlets as the first such restriction in the Arab world, aligning with broader international efforts to address concerns about the effects of social media on children and teenagers.
